Laboratory for Education in Sustainable Mobility (LEMOS)

The Laboratory for Education in Sustainable Mobility (LEMOS) is a research and educational unit within the Department of Political and International Sciences at the University of Siena. LEMOS conducts applied research and outreach activities dedicated to promoting sustainable mobility practices and fostering a culture of environmentally responsible movement across urban and regional contexts.

While mobility is a cornerstone of daily life and a vital dimension of sustainability, it often remains overlooked in policy and public discourse—despite its profound impact on environmental quality, urban liveability, and public health. LEMOS analyzes and communicates how to achieve mobility that is less polluting, more space-efficient, safer, and more equitable for all.

Mission and Activities

The mission of LEMOS is to advance knowledge and public awareness of sustainable mobility through:

  • Applied Research: Projects focused on mobility systems, transport networks, and the social, cultural, and territorial dimensions of movement.
  • Public Engagement: Dissemination activities designed to increase awareness of sustainable solutions among citizens, institutions, and stakeholders.
  • Education and Training: Initiatives equipped to provide students and professionals with the skills necessary to tackle contemporary mobility challenges.

LEMOS collaborates with public bodies, academic partners, and civil society organizations to explore innovative approaches, including non-motorized transport, multimodal systems, shared mobility, and the communication of transport innovations, all aimed at fostering healthier cities and more sustainable territories.

Research, Training, and Outreach

The laboratory’s core activities include:

  • Scientific Analysis: Researching mobility patterns, accessibility, and the interaction between transport systems and urban/regional spaces.
  • Professional Development: Advanced courses addressing the cultural, historical, and practical aspects of sustainable mobility, with a specific focus on mobility education and transport heritage.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Hosting public events, seminars, and workshops that bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and citizens to discuss best practices.

Team and Collaboration

LEMOS is powered by a multidisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in transport studies, mobility history, urban and regional planning, environmental policy, and the social sciences. The laboratory actively promotes national and international partnerships with universities, research centers, and institutions dedicated to sustainable mobility.
